MPEG-DASH vs HLS: A Streaming Protocol Selection Guide

The Two Major Protocols

MPEG-DASH and HLS are the two most widely used adaptive streaming protocols. HLS was introduced by Apple in 2009, while DASH was standardized by MPEG in 2012. They're functionally similar but differ significantly in ecosystem and compatibility.

Technical Architecture

HLS uses M3U8 as the playlist format with TS or fMP4 segments; DASH uses XML-based MPD (Media Presentation Description) as the playlist with MP4 segments. Both support adaptive bitrate, multiple audio tracks, subtitles, and DRM.

In terms of codec support, HLS initially only supported H.264 but later expanded to H.265 and AV1. DASH was designed to be codec-agnostic from the start, supporting any codec.

Ecosystem and Compatibility

HLS's biggest advantage is native support across the Apple ecosystem. Safari, iOS, and Apple TV all support HLS natively without any additional player. DASH, on the other hand, requires MSE (Media Source Extensions) on Apple devices, making it less compatible.

DASH's advantage is that it's an open standard not controlled by any single company. Android, Chrome, and Firefox all natively support DASH. For non-Apple platforms, DASH is often the better choice.

Practical Recommendations

To cover all platforms, it's best to provide both HLS and DASH formats. FFmpeg makes it easy to transcode source video into both formats simultaneously. Many CDNs and video platforms also offer automatic format conversion.
